Getting a divorce is never easy. It is so much harder when you are a celebrity and in the public eye. Even if you don’t want to be an example for anyone, you are held to a higher standard. Giada De Laurentiis and her ex-husband, Todd Thompson, have just finalized their divorce, and it is fodder for the media reporting on it.
Her ex-spouse and she are sharing custody of their 7-year-old daughter, however the Food Network star will still have to pay child support.
Apparently, the cost to Ms. De Laurentiis is pretty expensive. Popular media reports that 44-year-old Giada, will have to pay her ex-husband $9,000 a month in child support.
They separated last summer after having been married for approximately 11 years. There is no prenuptial agreement. She agreed to share with her ex a full 50 percent of all cookbooks she sold while they were married. She also agreed to give him 50 percent of all unpaid advances for various cookbooks that have not yet been published. The profits on her unpublished works are worth more than $5 million.
Mr. Thompson will be able to keep their home in Pacific Palisades, California. They are in the process of dividing up the multiple bank accounts that are said to be worth about $2 million.
When Giada announced the separation to the general public on a popular media account last summer, she iterated that she was glad that they had good memories and a daughter to share. She said that cooking actually helps her remain calm and that she is getting over her divorce by cooking and staying in the kitchen.
If you are going through a divorce, even if it is as public as this one, you may need some advice and a chance to have your side of the story told. You need to know what your rights are under the law as well.
